As I read through the Metro Times editorial today on the new contemporary art museum raising its head in Detroit, I have to say I was skeptical, optimistic, and curious simultaneously. The editorial http://www.metrotimes.com/editorial/story.asp?id=9717 is thorough and asks the questions I also wonder --- will it be (in Detroit) everything a contemporary art museum should be, will it be edgy and innovative if not a delight of mind-stirring stimulation with the wisp of controversial. I, for one, am attending the opening gala on October 26 and as a passionate collector of fine contemporary art await with anticipation to see how the launch flies.
Marsha Miro, co-founder and temporary director, believes this is something that is a crucial aspect missing in Detroit and states in the editorial, "We also needed a place that anyone would feel comfortable walking into," Miro says. "I've always believed art is critical for everybody, not just the artists, the people who can afford to buy it or those initiated in the intellectual ramifications of it. Art adds so much to you as a human being. In this city, we need the healing qualities of creativity more than anything." I'm with you Marsha!
The museum opens to the public on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 4454 Woodward Ave., Detroit; 248-851-5179. Here's a link to their site: http://www.mocadetroit.org/ Anticipate it with me and if inspired --- do tell all.
